The social support patterns and depression among the elderly living alone and their friends and neighbors

Abstract
This study tries to investigate the relationships between social support patterns with their friends and neighbors and depression among the elderly living alone. In this study it is assumed that the areas of social support was composed of emotional, instrumental, physical, and financial support. In addition, this study categorizes the social support patterns into two types; balanced exchange and non-balanced exchange. The data used in this study are "2008 National Data on the Elderly." The findings can be summarized as follows. First, The balanced exchange pattern is reported 79% in emotional area, 17.8% in instrumental area, 15.1% in physical area, and 2.2% in financial support area. Second, contact frequency, emotional exchange pattern, gender, religion, education, income, and self-rated health status have significant impacts on depression. The elderly living alone who have frequent contacts with friends and neighbors, and balanced emotional
exchange are less likely to be depressed.
